The research in the maritime circle is very active

Our region is one of the three most important centres of maritime research in Canada. Our numerous institutions with a marine vocation have an important number of research and development initiatives.

The Institut maritime du Québec (IMQ), the Institut scientifique des Sciences de la mer (ISMER) of the Université du Québec à Rimouski, the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute (MLI) and the Centre de recherche et de formation en transport maritime et intermodal (CFoRT) invest a lot solidify our authority in this field.

The research in the maritime circle is very activeSince 1987, Maurice-Lamontagne Institute houses the regional direction of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Laurentian Region, for both Sciences and Oceans.



The first has as its priorities:

  • Fish and Marine Mammals,
  • Invertebrates and Experimental Biology,
  • Ocean Sciences,
  • Hydrographic Services of Canada.

The second direction is responsible for:

  • Fish Habitat Management
  • Habitat Sciences
  • Contaminants and Ecotoxicology
  • Microbiology and Hydrocarbons

The Institute scientists are involved in numerous joint projects with the groupe interuniversitaire de recherches en océanographie du Québec (GIROQ), the Université du Québec à Rimouski, the Institut des sciences de la mer (ISMER), the Institut maritime du Québec, the IFREMER, as well as with other organizations.
